Rebel Against The Average

Fairway- Rebel Against the Average.

What is average?  It has so many different meanings and ways of being perceived.  Mathematicians can spend HOURS on the subject.  It can be “the middleish bit”, the “norm”, the “good enough or that will do” and even the “safe”.

As a student I was average, average grades, average attendance and average level of enthusiasm, and it didn’t concern or bother me at all.   However, if I was described as an average Golfer, Sprint Hurdler or even Chess Player then I was horrified, even furious!

So I would spend hours on the golf practice area or in my garden hitting golf balls, I would stay after school with the hurdles set out on the grass trying to get faster and more efficient over them and my parents bought me a plug in Chess Computer because I was costing a fortune in batteries as I spent evenings pretending to be Bobby Fischer.  (Hence my average school grades.)

But these averages I had a choice to rebel against and was prepared to put the effort and time to move away from them because they mattered to me.

Some averages we don’t choose.  I was part of a group of 4 friends- 3 of us over 6 foot tall and one friend (we shall call him Rob) was “average height” …. nearly.  He hated it.  At the bar we would pass our drinks over his head, he would mutter.  My suggestion of stilettos or Cuban Heels was met with a volley of expletives.   But when he returned from a visit to Nepal, he was grinning like a cheshire cat- “I was a giant- I am moving to live in Nepal” (where the average male height is 5f4 as opposed to 5 f9 in UK).

“Don’t ever visit Amsterdam” was my advice to Rob.

So, we have some choices where the average is concerned and some we need to accept (or move across the world).

And in our business, we are often asked to do things that are “average”.

Example:

Client: “We need our managers to be leaders.  Can you do a program to make them Leaders?  You know, communicate better, motivate better, set action plans better…”

Us:  We can do a needs analysis and create a bespoke program for the business to address identified issues and create the pathways towards your managers becoming the leaders you want”

Client: “Can you just do an off the shelf program- like others do?”

Us: “NO- because if you want the average then  you will get what the average does .  And you will be average.  We don’t do average- we don’t do “sticking plaster” “

So, our questions to you are.  “Are you average? are you happy to be average? are you content staying average?”  If so, there are plenty who will happily be average with you.

But not us.  If the thought of average horrifies you and you have a choice to not be average, then do something about it.  Come and have a conversation with us and we will welcome you to the world of “Rebel against the Average”.
